Make agents for the chat

Set up a chat once with its own instructions, model, notes, files and tools, then pick it in any chat.

An agent is a chat you set up once: a name and a face, instructions for how it should work, the model it answers with, the folders, notes and files it knows, and the tools it may use. Make a Meeting Recap that turns a transcript into decisions and to-dos, or an Editor that tightens a draft and keeps your voice, then pick it whenever you need it. Agents are part of the Pro and Lifetime plans, like the chat itself.

Make an agent

Open Settings and go to Agents, in the AI group under Models. Choose New agent, or pick one of the Examples to open a new agent that is already filled in. Give it a name and a line on what it is for. A new agent comes with a face picked at random, and an example brings its own.

Write its instructions the way you would brief a person: what it is for, how it should write, what to check and what to leave alone. Plain words work best. Then choose Add agent.

Step by stepOn desktop
1Open Settings and go to Agents, under Models.
2Click New agent, or one of the Examples to start from it.
3Change its name, its line or its instructions as you like.
4Scroll to the end and click Add agent.
5The agent joins the list.
Step by stepOn mobile
1Open Settings from the gear on the Folders screen and tap Agents.
2Tap New agent, or an example to start from it.
3Change its name, its line or its instructions as you like.
4At the end of the page, tap Add agent.

Change its look

An agent's face is a little character in a color, with eyes, a mouth and sometimes an extra like glasses, headphones or a hat. To change it, open the agent in Settings and click or tap the pencil on the corner of its face. Look opens with the face at the top: pick its character, its color, its eyes, its mouth and an extra. Each choice shows the face it would make, so the colors show your character in each one. The face changes as you pick, and Shuffle picks everything for you. On desktop click Done, then Save. On the phone close Look and the agent keeps its new face.

The face goes wherever the agent does: in the chat's title and the chat history, and on desktop in the menu you pick agents from. In a new chat it watches the message box while you type. While it works it thinks, reads or writes, it hops when the answer is in, and it looks worried when something goes wrong. An agent that is off sleeps. With Reduce Motion on in your system settings, the faces hold still.

Step by stepOn desktop
1On the agent, click the pencil on its face.
2Pick a character, a color, eyes, a mouth and an extra. The face changes as you pick.
3Or click Shuffle and let it pick for you.
4Click Done, then Save on the agent to keep it.
Step by stepOn mobile
1On the agent's page, tap the pencil on its face.
2Pick a character, a color, eyes, a mouth and an extra. The face changes as you pick.
3Or tap Shuffle and let it pick for you.
4Close Look. The agent keeps its new face.

Pick its model

Under Model, pick the model the agent answers with, from the chat models you switched on in Models. With an Anthropic key and an OpenAI key, one agent can answer with Claude and another with GPT. Leave it on The chat's model and the agent answers with whatever the chat has picked.

In a chat with the agent, the model under the message box starts on the agent's model. Pick another there and only that chat changes: the next chat with the agent starts on its own model again. On a device where the agent's model is not set up, it answers with the chat's model.

Step by stepOn desktop
1On the agent, open the list under Model.
2Pick the model it answers with.
3In a chat with it, the model under the message box starts on it.
Step by stepOn mobile
1On the agent's page, tap the row under Model.
2Pick the model it answers with.
3In a chat with it, the model under the message box starts on it.

Give it knowledge

Under Knowledge, add the folders, notes and files it should read first. A folder brings the folders inside it, and it stays up to date: a note you put in the folder later is part of what the agent knows. A locked note never reaches an agent, and neither does anything in Recently Deleted.

Add files takes PDFs, pictures and text files (.txt, .md, .csv and .json), up to 20 files of up to 20 MB each. On the phone it offers Files and Photos. The files sync with the agent to your other devices. The agent opens one when it needs it: a text file with any model, a PDF with a model that reads PDFs, and a picture with a model that can see images. When its model cannot, the agent says so.

Step by stepOn desktop
1Click Add files to give it PDFs, pictures or text files.
2Or click Add a folder or note, and pick a folder.
3They join the knowledge. A folder brings every folder inside it and stays up to date.
Step by stepOn mobile
1Tap Add files, then Files or Photos.
2Or tap Add a folder or note, and pick a folder.
3They join the knowledge. A folder brings every folder inside it and stays up to date.

Choose its tools

Each tool is a switch, and a tool that is off is one the agent never uses, even when you ask for it:

  • Search the web looks things up online. It works with Grape AI and OpenAI models, as web search does in any chat.
  • Read all your notes lets it search and read your whole library, not only what it knows. With it off, the agent reads only its own folders and notes, the note you have open, and what it creates in that chat.
  • Create and edit notes lets it write new notes and change the ones it can read, the way the chat edits your notes.
  • Organize notes lets it move notes and create, rename and move folders.
  • Delete notes lets it move notes and folders to Recently Deleted.
  • Make images lets it generate an image with the image model picked in Models.
  • Use memory lets it read and save what the AI remembers about you. With it off, it does neither.

A new agent starts with web search, reading, writing and memory on, and organizing, deleting and images off. Your custom instructions apply to agents too.

Every agent can also look things up in the help center, since that reads nothing of yours. Changing your settings stays with Grape AI: an agent never does it.

Step by stepOn desktop
1Turn a tool on or off with its switch.
2Click Save. A tool that is off is one it never uses.
Step by stepOn mobile
1Turn a tool on or off with its switch.
2It saves at once. A tool that is off is one it never uses.

Chat with an agent

Tap the chat's title, at the top of the chat panel or the chat sheet, and pick one of your agents, or Grape AI, at any time. The agent follows its instructions, reads its knowledge first and answers with its model.

Its face stays in the title and in the chat history, so its chats are easy to find, and when a reply lands while the chat is closed, the notice says its name.

Step by stepOn desktop
1Click the chat's title and pick one of your agents.
2The chat is with the agent now, its face in the title.
3It answers the way you told it to.
Step by stepOn mobile
1Tap the chat's title and pick one of your agents.
2The chat is with the agent now, its face beside the title.
3It answers the way you told it to.

Edit or delete an agent

Open Settings, go to Agents and pick the agent: on desktop click its pencil, change what you need and click Save, or click Agents at the top of the page to go back to the list; on the phone tap it, and changes save as you make them. Delete agent removes it. Its chats stay, and talk to Grape AI from then on.

Step by stepOn desktop
1In Settings under Agents, click the pencil on the agent.
2Change what you need and click Save.
3Or click Delete agent. Its chats stay and talk to Grape AI.
Step by stepOn mobile
1In Settings under Agents, tap the agent.
2Changes save as you make them. Delete agent at the end removes it.

Turn an agent off

Each agent has a switch, the way prompt templates do: on desktop at the end of its row in Settings, on the phone on the agent's page, under its instructions. An agent that is off leaves the menu under the chat's title, and its chats talk to Grape AI until you turn it back on, when they have it back. Nothing about the agent is lost while it is off.

Step by stepOn desktop
1In Settings under Agents, click the switch on the agent's row.
2It stays in the list, and leaves the chat's title menu until you turn it back on.
Step by stepOn mobile
1On the agent's page, turn off Enabled under its instructions.
2The list says Disabled, and the chat's title menu leaves it out until you turn it back on.

Put them in order

Each agent has a grip at the start of its row in Settings. On desktop, drag it up or down the list; on the phone, touch and hold it, then drag. The menu under the chat's title lists your agents in the same order, so the ones you use most can come first.

Step by stepOn desktop
1Drag an agent by the grip at the start of its row.
2Drop it where it belongs. The chat's title menu follows the new order.
Step by stepOn mobile
1Touch and hold the grip beside an agent, then drag it.
2Let go where it belongs. The chat's title menu follows the new order.

Let it work on its own

On Pro, an agent can also work while you are away: give it a routine, like every weekday at 8:00, find the news on a topic and write a short note, and it runs at that time on Grape's servers even with your devices off. Make one in Settings under Routines, or ask the agent in the chat. Grape AI can take routines too, so you do not need an agent for one.

They travel with you

Agents sync with your settings, so an agent you make on desktop is on your phone too, with the same face, in the same order and with the same switch, with its files and your chats with it.
