Use Grape in your browser

Open Grape at app.grape.cool on a computer or a tablet, keep your notes in the browser or sync them, and what the browser version cannot do.

Grape also runs in a browser tab, at app.grape.cool. It is the desktop app in your browser, with the same look and the same editor, and it works in Chrome, Edge, Safari and Firefox on a computer or a tablet. There is nothing to install, and it is on every plan, Free included.

Opening Grape

Go to app.grape.cool. There is no account step: your notes are kept inside the browser on that computer, the way the desktop app keeps them on your disk. Once Grape has opened there, it opens again without an internet connection, notes and all.

On a phone, app.grape.cool shows a page with links to the App Store and Google Play instead. The mobile app is the Grape for a phone, and it works offline too.

Step by stepOn desktop
1Go to app.grape.cool in Chrome, Edge, Safari or Firefox.
2Grape opens in the tab, the same app as on the desktop, with no account needed.

Signing in

Open Settings, go to Account and choose Sign in, as on the desktop. The tab goes to grape.cool, where you log in with Google, or with Apple when the page offers it, and then comes back to Grape signed in. You only need an account for a plan: Free works without one.

Step by stepOn desktop
1Open Settings, go to Account and choose Sign in under the plans.
2The tab goes to grape.cool. Choose Login with Google and pick your account.
3Back in Grape, Account shows your name, your email and your plan.

Syncing with your other devices

With a plan that includes sync, Sync, Plus or Pro, your notes sync between the browser and the Mac, Windows, iPhone and Android apps, the way they do between any two of your devices. The pictures in a note download when you open the note.

On Lifetime, the browser syncs through your own Dropbox or Google Drive, like the apps. Open Settings, go to Cloud Sync and connect one: the sign-in opens in a small window that closes itself when it is done. If nothing opens, let the browser show pop-ups for app.grape.cool.

One tab at a time

Grape opens in one browser tab at a time, so nothing is written twice. Open it in a second tab and that tab says Grape is open in another tab, with a Use here button. Choose Use here and Grape moves to that tab, and the first tab shows the same message.

Step by stepOn desktop
1Open Grape in a second tab and that tab says it is open in another one.
2Choose Use here to move Grape to this tab.
3Grape opens here, and the first tab shows the same message.

Keeping your notes in the browser

A browser can clear a site's storage on its own: Safari after 7 days without a visit, and the others when the disk runs low. Notes kept only in that browser would go with it, so keep them somewhere else as well:

  • Sync. On Sync, Plus or Pro your notes are also in your account and on your other devices.
  • Install Grape. Choose Install in the browser's address bar, or Add to Dock in Safari. The browser is then more likely to keep Grape's notes.
  • Download a backup now and then, as the next section shows.

Private windows cannot keep notes at all, so Grape asks you to open it in a normal window.

Downloading a backup

Open Settings, go to Backups and choose Download beside Download a backup. The browser saves a zip of your whole library, and the zip opens in Grape on Mac, Windows, iPhone and Android. In the browser this is on every plan, Free included, because the browser may hold the only copy of your notes. On the desktop and the phone, backups come with a paid plan.

Under it, Browser storage shows how much room Grape takes in this browser and whether the browser will keep it. Without sync, Grape reminds you once a week to download a backup.

Step by stepOn desktop
1Open Settings and go to Backups.
2Choose Download beside Download a backup.

What the browser cannot do

A few things need the computer itself, so they stay with the desktop app:

  • The quick capture shortcut, which opens a note from anywhere on your computer.
  • Choosing the folder your notes are kept in. The browser keeps them.
  • Importing from Apple Notes.
  • App updates. There is nothing to update: Grape is on its newest version each time the page reloads.
  • Reading the text in a scan, which uses the Mac's own text recognition.
  • Telling you that AI work finished when no Grape tab is open. With a tab open, it does, as on the desktop.

Notifications

On Sync, Plus or Pro, sharing invitations and agent routines can notify you even with no Grape tab open, the way they do on the phone. Turn them on in Settings, Notifications, and choose Allow when the browser asks. Clicking a notification opens Grape on what it was about.

Shortcuts in the browser

Cmd N, Cmd T and Cmd W on a Mac, and Ctrl N, Ctrl T and Ctrl W on other computers, stay with the browser. In Grape on the web you use these instead, and Settings, Shortcuts lists them:

  • New note: Ctrl Option N on a Mac, Ctrl Alt N on other computers.
  • New folder: Ctrl Option Shift N, or Ctrl Alt Shift N.
  • Today's note in Daily Notes: Ctrl Option T, or Ctrl Alt T.

Recordings, PDFs, AI and study tools

These work the way they do in the desktop app, on the same notes:

  • Recordings. The browser asks to use the microphone the first time. In Chrome and Edge you can also record what a tab or your screen plays: choose the sound source in the recorder, then pick the tab or screen in the browser's window and tick sharing its audio. Safari and Firefox record the microphone only.
  • PDFs show their first page in the note and open in a tab of their own. Save as PDF opens the browser's print window, where you choose Save as PDF.
  • AI works with Grape AI on Plus and Pro, or with your own keys on Pro and Lifetime. Ollama and LM Studio work in Chrome and Edge once they allow app.grape.cool.
  • Study tools, version history, templates, locked notes and imports work as they do on the desktop.

Clipping pages to the browser

The Grape Web Clipper can save to Grape in the browser: open its settings and set Save clips to Grape in the browser. A clip opens app.grape.cool in a tab of its own, which hands it to the Grape tab you have open, or opens Grape if none is. The pictures of a clipped page stay as links to the page's pictures, where the desktop app keeps a copy in the note.
