Set up daily notes with a template

Make a daily note template and a Daily Notes folder, and start each day with a note that already has its date and sections.

Grape has no separate daily notes switch. A template and a folder make the same thing: each morning you start a note from the template in that folder, and it comes with today's date as its title and the same sections as every other day. It works on desktop and mobile, on every plan.

Make the template

Go to Settings, open the Templates tab and choose Add Note Template. Call it Daily note and choose Create, and it opens as a new note for you to write the page every day starts from.

The first line of a note is its title, so put a date variable there. {{date:EEEE, d MMMM yyyy}} names each note like Thursday, 24 September 2026, and {{date:yyyy-MM-dd}} like 2026-09-24. Under it, add the sections you fill in every day, for example a Top three checklist, Notes and For tomorrow.

If one of your notes already has the shape you want, open it, open the note menu and choose Save as Template instead. Create note templates lists every variable and date pattern.

A template is a note, so it is kept in the folder that was open when you made it. A Templates folder keeps it out of your list of days.

Step by stepOn desktop
1In Settings, Templates, click Add Note Template.
2Call it Daily note and click Create.
3Put a date variable on the first line and your sections under it.
Step by stepOn mobile
1In Settings, Templates, tap Add Note Template.
2Call it Daily note and tap Create.
3Put a date variable on the first line and your sections under it.

Make the folder

On desktop, click the New Folder button at the top of the sidebar, or press Cmd Shift N on Mac and Ctrl Shift N on Windows and Linux. On mobile, tap the folder button at the top of the Folders screen. Call it Daily Notes, or Journal, whatever you will look for. Create folders and subfolders has the rest.

Start each day

Open the Daily Notes folder first, because a note made from a template goes into the folder that is open.

  • On desktop, right click the New Note button above the note list and choose Daily note.
  • On mobile, touch and hold the New Note button and choose Daily note.

Today's note opens with its date and your sections. The variables are filled in once, when the note is made, so yesterday's note keeps yesterday's date.

If you keep other templates too, drag Daily note to the top of the Templates tab and it comes first in the menu.

Step by stepOn desktop
1Open Daily Notes, right click the New Note button and choose Daily note.
2Today's note opens with its date and your sections.
Step by stepOn mobile
1Open Daily Notes and touch and hold the New Note button.
2Choose Daily note.
3Today's note opens with its date and your sections.

Going back to a day

  • Search for a date, like 24 September, and that day's note comes up, since the date is its title.
  • In Settings, Notes, sort by Date created and the list reads like a journal: a day you go back to and edit stays in its place. The setting covers every folder, see Sort and group your notes.
  • With Group notes by date on, the list splits into Today, Yesterday, Previous 7 Days, Previous 30 Days and then months.
  • A year of days makes a long list. A subfolder for each year or month keeps it short, as long as you open the right one before you start the day's note.

On your other devices

With sync on, the template, the order of the Templates tab and the Daily Notes folder are on every device, so you can start the day on your laptop and add to it from your phone. Make each day's note on one device only: if two devices each make one before they sync, you end up with two notes for that day.
