The web clipper is a Chrome extension that saves the page you are reading straight into the Grape desktop app, with the navigation and the ad boxes stripped out.
Installing it
Install the extension from the Chrome Web Store, then keep the desktop app installed on the same machine. The clipper hands each clip to the app over the grape:// link Grape already registers, so there is no server in the middle and no account to connect. Chrome 116 or newer is required.
The three ways to take a page
Open the panel from the toolbar button and pick a mode:
- Article is the readable body of the page, with the navigation, ads and newsletter boxes removed
- Selection is only what you highlighted, taken exactly as it is
- Bookmark is the title, the link and the page summary, with no body text
The page is read once and all three modes are answered from that single pass, so switching between them is instant.
Fixing it before it saves
The title and the body sit in fields you can edit in the panel. What stands in them when you press Save is exactly what the note gets. Every clip opens with its title and a source line naming the site, the author and the publication date, so the note says where it came from.
Clipping without opening the panel
Cmd Shift U on Mac, Ctrl Shift U elsewhere, clips the page. Cmd Shift Y or Ctrl Shift Y clips the selection. Right clicking the page or a selection offers the same two. These use your defaults and never show the panel.
Setting the defaults
Open the extension options to set the folder new clips land in, the tags they carry, the mode the panel opens on, and whether images come along. The app lets you pick an accent colour that the clipper cannot read across the link, so the same palette is offered here and the two are matched by choosing it once.
What happens to the images
Images cannot travel inside a link, so the clip carries their addresses and the desktop app downloads them into the same folder every other note image lives in. That is what keeps a clipped article readable offline and after the original page is gone. The clipped note opens in the app as soon as it lands and syncs up with everything else.
