In a shared folder or note open on several devices at once, the people on Pro see each other type in real time. Each person writes at a cursor in their own color with their name on it, and everyone in the note shows in its header. Live typing is part of the Pro plan. On Sync you share, edit and merge all the same, and the edits arrive when the apps sync.
Seeing who is in the note
Open a note in a folder you share, or in one someone shared with you. Everyone else who has it open on Pro shows as a small circle with the first letter of their name, in their color, at the right of the note's header next to the menu. On desktop, hold the pointer over the circles to read the names.
Typing together
What the others type appears in the note as they type it, and what you type appears for them. Their cursor is drawn in their color, with their name on it while they type or move it. A few seconds after they stop, the name goes and only the cursor stays, so it does not cover the line above for long. Near the right edge the name stands to the left of the cursor, and text someone selects shows a light wash of their color.
Two of you can write in the same paragraph at the same time and nothing is overwritten. Version history lists the edits under the name of whoever made them.
Can view
People with Can view see the typing and the cursors as they happen and cannot type: the note stays read only for them, with no toolbar and no keyboard.
Undo
Undo in a live note takes back your own typing only. What someone else just wrote stays where it is.
People on Sync
Live typing comes with Pro. On the Sync plan you share, edit and merge the same way, but your edits travel with sync: a couple of seconds after you stop, when the app comes back to the front and every fifteen minutes. There are no cursors and no circles in the header.
In a share with people on both plans, the people on Pro see each other type, and an edit from someone on Sync lands in the note when their sync does.
What goes live
The text of a note. A drawing, a picture, a PDF, a recording, flashcards, a quiz, a mind map, a slide deck or a mini app in it travels with sync and shows up for the others in the note a couple of seconds after it is saved. Handwriting notes are not typed in live: their pages travel with sync. Locked notes are never shared, so they are never live.
When the connection drops
If Grape cannot reach the live service, the note quietly goes back to merging with sync, so nothing you type is held back, and live typing is tried again a little later or when you come back to the app.
