Review brings your study cards back just before you would forget them. A card you know well waits weeks, one you keep missing comes back in minutes, and each day you only see what is due. It works on every plan, Free and Sync included, with the flashcards, quizzes and fill in the blank exercises you write by hand as well as the ones the AI makes. Everything happens on your device, the daily reminder too.
Turning it on
Review is off until you turn it on. Open Settings, choose Review and turn on Spaced repetition. You can also turn it on from a study tool: open flashcards, a quiz or a fill in the blank exercise in a note and choose Turn on spaced repetition at the foot of it, Turn on on mobile.
Once it is on, a Review button shows over the sidebar on desktop, just before New folder, with the number of cards due. When the sidebar is hidden it moves into the note list header. On mobile it sits in the top bar of the folders screen. Turning Review off again hides it, and your history stays for the day you turn it back on.
What joins Review
Every flashcard deck, quiz and fill in the blank exercise in your notes joins Review by itself, the old ones included. Each flashcard is a card, each quiz question is a card, and each fill in the blank sentence is a card. Edit a set and Review follows: a new card joins, a removed one leaves, and a card you only fixed keeps its history.
The foot of each study tool says where it stands in Review: how many of its cards are due today, or the day the next one comes back. Mind maps and slide decks are not in Review, and neither are notes shared with you yet.
Starting a review
Click or tap Review. The Today tab says how many cards are new, still being learned and due, and about how long they take. Choose Start review.
To study one note, right click it in the note list on desktop and choose Review this note, or choose Review this note from the menu at the top of the note on mobile. Review in the foot of a study tool starts with just that set. On desktop, the menu beside Start review switches between All notes and the note or set you opened Review from.
New cards come in a few a day, 20 unless you change it, so a deck of two hundred does not land on you at once. A review day starts at 4 in the morning, so a late night session still counts toward the day before.
Answering a card
A flashcard shows its front. Think of the answer, then choose Show answer, Space on desktop, to see the back. A quiz question shows its answers in a new order each time: pick one, with A to D on desktop. A fill in the blank sentence shows its blanks: type the words and choose Check.
Then grade how it went:
- Again: you did not know it. It comes back in a few minutes.
- Hard: you got it, with effort.
- Good: you got it.
- Easy: you knew it at once. It waits longest.
Each grade shows how long the card would wait. For quiz questions and fill in the blank sentences, Grape suggests a grade from your answer and puts it first, and you can pick another. On desktop, 1 to 4 grade from the keyboard. Undo takes the last answer back, Command or Control with Z on desktop, and End review stops whenever you like. When the cards are done you see how many you went through and how long it took, and any you missed come back later the same day.
Typing your answers
Turn on Type answers in Settings under Review to write each flashcard answer before you see it. Check compares what you wrote with the back of the card and says how many of the words match, and I don't know shows the answer without a guess. Grape suggests a grade from how close you were.
On Plus, Pro and Lifetime the AI also reads your answer for meaning, so a right answer in other words counts. On Free and Sync the words are compared on your device, and you grade it yourself as usual. Type answers is kept on each device, so you can type on the computer and flip cards on your phone.
Pausing a set
The Sets tab in Review lists every flashcard deck, quiz and fill in the blank exercise. Turn one off to pause it: its cards stop coming up and keep their history. You can pause or resume a set from the foot of the study tool in the note too.
The daily reminder
Turn on Daily reminder in Settings under Review and pick its time. The reminder says how many cards are due and about how long they take, and it only comes on days with cards due. Click or tap it and Review opens.
The reminder is a notification your device sets itself, so it costs nothing and works on every plan. On the phone, Grape asks to send notifications when you turn it on. If you said no before, turn notifications on for Grape in the phone's settings. On the computer, the reminder comes while Grape is running, and if its time passed while Grape was closed, it comes a moment after you open it. The reminder and its time are kept on each device, so you can have one on your phone and none on the computer.
Settings
Under Review in Settings:
- New cards a day: how many cards you see for the first time each day, 20 to start. The rest wait for the days after.
- Remember: how much you want to remember when a card comes back, from 80% to 95%, 90% to start. Higher means more reviews. Changing it reschedules every card.
These settings travel with the rest of your settings when you sync.
Your progress
The Today tab keeps your streak, the share of cards you remembered, the reviews you did this week and a chart of your reviews day by day. Keeps slipping lists the cards you have forgotten again and again, with Edit on desktop or Open on mobile to go to the card in its note and fix it. A card that keeps slipping is often two ideas on one card, or one that needs a clearer note.
On every device
With sync on, Grape Cloud carries your review history, so a card you answer on the phone is not due again on the computer. Without sync, or when your devices sync through your own Dropbox or Google Drive, each device keeps its own history for now.
How it schedules
Grape schedules cards with FSRS, the same method Anki offers. It works out how well you know each card from how you graded it before, and asks it again just before the chance of remembering it drops below the Remember setting. A new card or one you forgot goes through short steps first, 1 minute and 10 minutes, before it moves on to days.
