Grape reads the .apkg files Anki exports. Import one into a flashcard deck and its cards become the deck's cards. Import one into a quiz and its cards become questions. Import one into a fill in the blank exercise and its cloze notes, and its cards that ask you to type a word of a sentence, become the exercise's sentences. Pictures and recordings come along every time. Importing works on desktop and on mobile, on every plan, Free included.
Export a deck from Anki
In Anki on your computer, choose File and then Export, or click the gear beside a deck and choose Export. Pick Anki Deck Package (.apkg) as the format, choose the deck, and keep Include media ticked so the pictures and sounds come along. AnkiMobile and AnkiDroid can export a deck package too, and a collection package (.colpkg), Anki's backup of everything, works as well. To import on your phone, put the file where it can reach it, such as iCloud Drive, Google Drive or AirDrop to the Files app.
Into flashcards
Add Flashcards to a note and click or tap its card. Before the deck has any cards, Import from Anki stands next to Create by hand. Choose it and pick the .apkg file. Every card in the file becomes a card of this deck, and the deck opens to study.
- Each side is drawn the way Anki draws it, from its note type's template, so a vocabulary card with several fields shows on each side what Anki showed.
- Cloze deletions become one card for each cloze, with [...] or its hint where the answer goes on the front and the whole sentence on the back.
- Reversed cards come across as both of the cards Anki made.
Into a quiz
Add Quiz to a note and click or tap its card. Before the quiz has any questions, choose Import from Anki next to Create by hand and pick the .apkg file.
- Multiple choice notes, the kind the multiple choice add-ons for Anki make, keep their own answers with the right one marked. A quiz shows up to four answers, so a note with five keeps the right one and the first three others. A note with more than one right answer is left out.
- Every other card becomes a question: its front is asked, and the first line of its back is the right answer, among three wrong answers taken from other cards in the file, about as long as the right one. A cloze card asks its sentence and takes the cloze as its answer.
- A card whose back has no words, only a picture, is left out, since an answer has to be words.
Into fill in the blank
Add Fill in the Blank to a note and click or tap its card. Before the exercise has any sentences, choose Import from Anki next to Create by hand and pick the .apkg file. Each cloze note becomes a sentence, and each of its clozes a blank, so {{c1::mitochondria}} hides mitochondria. A sentence takes up to five blanks, and any clozes after the fifth stay written in.
Many decks make the same exercise without clozes: the front shows a sentence with the answer in bold, which the deck's styling draws as an empty line, or with a blank written as ____, and asks you to type the answer. Grape brings those in too. The word you type becomes the sentence's blank, the front's other words follow the sentence in brackets as its clue, and the picture and the sentence's own recording come along. A card that shows to show sadness, a picture and He ____ when he is sad. becomes He ____ when he is sad. (to show sadness), with cries to type.
Cards that never show their answer on the front, such as a plain front and back, are left out, so bring those into flashcards or a quiz instead.
What comes across
- Pictures stay with their card, question or sentence, up to four on each, the same way a picture you put on a card yourself does.
- Recordings in MP3, M4A, AAC or WAV stay with their card, question or sentence, up to four on each, and play from its speaker. See Hear cards and notes read aloud.
- The language Anki speaks a side in, from its text to speech tags, stays with the side, so Grape reads it in that language with a voice on your device.
- Text comes across as plain text. Line breaks and lists are kept, and furigana is written in brackets after its word. Bold, colors and fonts are not.
- Up to 5,000 cards, questions or sentences go into one set. Export a bigger collection a deck at a time and import each into a note of its own.
What stays behind
- Recordings in a format not every device plays, such as Ogg, and recordings over 10 MB.
- Your Anki review history. With spaced repetition on, imported cards start as new cards, whatever Anki had scheduled.
- Suspended cards and image occlusion cards, which need Anki to draw their masks, and cards that come out with nothing on a side.
- Pictures from the web, SVG drawings, and pictures in a format not every device can show, such as TIFF.
- Your note types' styling and scripts.
When something stays behind, Grape says how many cards, pictures and recordings once the import is done.
After the import
The set is yours like any other: choose Edit to fix a card, hide a different word or add your own. A recording shows under its words in the editor, where you can play it or take it off. The set syncs with the note, pictures and recordings included, and with spaced repetition on its cards join Review a few new ones a day, as many as New cards a day in Settings under Review allows.
