Create folders and subfolders

Build a folder tree, nest subfolders, rename and reorder them on desktop and mobile.

Folders work best for things with a natural container: a course, a client, a project, a year.

Creating a folder

On desktop, use the New Folder button at the top of the sidebar or press Cmd Shift N on Mac and Ctrl Shift N on Windows and Linux. On mobile, tap the folder button in the top corner of the Folders screen.

Step by stepOn desktop
1Click the New Folder button at the top of the sidebar.
2Type a name for the folder and click Create.
3The folder joins the tree, ready for notes.
Step by stepOn mobile
1On the Folders screen, tap the folder button at the top.
2Type a name and tap the check.
3The folder joins the list with its note count.

Creating a subfolder

On desktop, right click a folder and choose New Subfolder. On mobile, open a folder and choose New Subfolder from the menu in the header. Folders nest as deep as you like, and each one shows its note count.

Step by stepOn desktop
1Right click a folder and choose New Subfolder.
2Name the subfolder and click Create.
3It nests under its parent, with its own note count.
Step by stepOn mobile
1Open the folder and tap the menu in the header.
2Choose New Subfolder.
3Name it and tap the check.
4The subfolder shows under Folders, above the notes.

Renaming and reordering

On desktop, right click a folder to rename it, and drag folders to reorder them. On mobile, use Rename Folder from the folder menu, and tap the pencil on the Folders screen to drag rows into a new order.

Step by stepOn desktop
1Right click the folder and choose Rename Folder.
2Type the new name in place and press Return.
3Drag a folder up or down the list to give it a new place.
Step by stepOn mobile
1In the folder, open the menu and choose Rename Folder.
2Type the new name and tap the check.
Step by stepOn mobile
1On the Folders screen, tap the pencil.
2Drag a folder by its handle to where you want it.
3Tap the dots beside a folder to rename or delete it.
4Tap the check when the order is right.

Deleting a folder

Deleting a folder with notes or subfolders inside asks for confirmation first. An empty folder is removed immediately.

Step by stepOn desktop
1Right click the folder and choose Delete Folder.
2A folder with notes in it asks first. Click Delete to go ahead.
Step by stepOn mobile
1In the folder, open the menu and choose Delete Folder.
2A folder with notes or subfolders in it asks first.

Sharing a folder

On the Sync or Pro plan a folder can be shared with other people, its subfolders and notes included. On desktop, right click it and choose Share Folder. On mobile, open it and choose Share Folder from the menu in the header.

When to stop organizing

If you are deciding between two folders for more than a couple of seconds, put the note anywhere and move on. Search by meaning finds notes by what they say, so filing is a convenience rather than the only route back to your writing.
