Resize images, scans, drawings and PDFs

Make a picture, a scan, a drawing or a PDF page in a note wider or narrower, on desktop and on the phone, and how its size carries to your other devices.

A picture, a document scan, a drawing and the first page of a PDF go into a note at the usual size. You can make any of them wider or narrower, on desktop and on the phone. It works on every plan, Free included.

On desktop

Right click the picture, scan, drawing or PDF page, or click the three dots at its top right, and choose Resize, and a small square appears on its bottom right corner. Drag the square to make the card wider or narrower. The card resizes as you drag, and its height follows the picture's own shape.

On the way it snaps to three sizes when you come close to one: the usual size, half the width of the text and the full width of the text. Let go and the card keeps its size, then click anywhere else to finish. Cmd Z on a Mac, or Ctrl Z on Windows and Linux, puts the old size back.

Step by stepOn desktop
1Right click the picture, or click its three dots, and choose Resize.
2A small square shows on its bottom right corner. Drag it.
3Drag the square. The picture follows, and snaps to half or all of the width of the text.
4Let go, and the picture keeps its new size. Click anywhere else to finish.

On mobile

On iPhone, iPad and Android, long press the picture, scan, drawing or PDF page, or tap the three dots at its top right, and choose Resize.

A round handle appears on the card's bottom right corner, with an outline around the card. Drag the handle and the card follows your finger, over the text below it. You feel a light tick when it lands on the usual size, half the width of the text or the full width of the text. Let go and the note makes room, then tap anywhere else in the note to finish. Undo puts the old size back.

Step by stepOn mobile
1Long press the picture, or tap its three dots, and choose Resize.
2Drag the round handle on its bottom right corner.
3The picture follows your finger, and snaps to half or all of the width of the text.
4Let go and the note makes room. Tap anywhere else to finish.

How big a card can be

  • The smallest is 120 points wide, and the biggest is the width of the text.
  • A card made full width fills the text's width on every device, so a picture made full width on a laptop fills the phone screen too.
  • Any other size is the same on every device. On a screen narrower than that, the card fits the screen.
  • The height follows the picture's shape. A very tall picture is cropped to its middle past one and a half times its width, as it already was at the usual size.

PDFs on the phone

On iPhone, iPad and Android a PDF shows its first page as a picture once the file is on the device, and it is resized the same way. While it is still downloading from sync it shows a compact card with its name and size, and a PDF that cannot be drawn, like a password protected one, keeps that card. On desktop, a PDF added on the phone shows its first page too.

In a table

A picture in a table still fits its column. On the phone, Resize is not offered for a card inside a table.

Where the size goes

The size is part of the note, so it syncs with the note and comes back with a backup. In a note shared with you that you can only view, the size cannot be changed. Older versions of the apps show every card at its usual size until they update.
