The chat sits inside the app and works with your library rather than in a vacuum.
Opening it
On desktop, the chat is the right hand panel, toggled with the panel button in the editor header. On mobile, tap the sparkles button in the bottom bar and the chat opens as a sheet.
What you can ask
- Questions about what you wrote: what did I decide, what is still open, what did this person say; a locked note is never part of the answer, the AI does not see it
- Summaries of a note, a folder or a stretch of time
- Rewrites and drafts based on your own material
- What a photo or screenshot in a note says, read straight from the image
- An image of something, generated on the spot and put into a note
- A setting changed for you, like graph view on, a new theme or another model
- How Grape itself works and whether it can do something, answered from the help center
- Anything you would ask a general assistant, with your notes available as context
It knows where you are
The note you have open is passed along automatically, so ask about this note without describing it. With no note open, the folder or tag you are viewing sets the scope.
Talking to an agent
The chat's title at the top picks who you talk to: Grape AI, or an agent you made with its own instructions, the notes it should know and the tools it may use.
Picking a model
The model picker in the composer lists every chat model you enabled in Settings under Models. Attach images or PDFs with the paperclip, and on desktop you can drop files straight onto the window. A PDF or an image that is already in a note needs no attaching: ask about the PDF or the image and the AI reads it from the note.
Past conversations
The history button lists earlier chats with search. Each chat titles itself, and deleting one removes just that conversation. On iPhone and iPad your chats are in Spotlight too, under the same names.
An answer still being written is not lost when you move on. On desktop it keeps writing into its own chat when you start a new chat or open an older one, and Stop works again when you go back to it. On the phone, close the chat and the answer carries on, but starting a new chat or opening another one stops it. Either way, Grape tells you when a reply lands while you are away from it, see Get notified when the AI is done.
Getting better answers
Be specific about scope. Asking about a folder or a date range gives sharper answers than asking about everything at once.
