Notes are written in your device's own sans serif to begin with. The note font sets them in another face, for the text of your notes rather than the menus and settings around them. It is in Settings under Appearance on desktop and mobile, on every plan.
On desktop
Open Settings, go to Appearance and open Note font, under Line height. Each choice in the list is written in its own face, the sans fonts first and the monospaced ones under a line.
On mobile
Open Settings, tap Appearance, then Note font at the end of the list. Each choice has an Aa in its own face beside it, the sans fonts in one group and the monospaced ones in a second, so you can compare them before you tap one.
The fonts
Two are your device's own, so they look a little different from one device to the next:
- Sans serif, the system font: San Francisco on a Mac, an iPhone and an iPad, Segoe UI on Windows, Roboto on Android
- Monospace, the system's monospace: SF Mono on Apple devices, Consolas or Cascadia Mono on Windows, the system monospace on Android
Four come with Grape itself:
- iA Writer Quattro, made for writing apps: proportional, with a typewriter's warmth
- Inter, neutral and very readable
- iA Writer Duo, monospaced, with wider m, w and M
- Courier Prime, the typewriter look and the standard face for screenplays
That makes three sans fonts and three monospaced ones. The four are part of the app, so a note looks the same on your laptop and your phone, and they work offline: nothing is downloaded when you pick one. All four are open source fonts under the SIL Open Font License.
What changes
The text of your notes changes, headings, lists and tables included, and bold and italic use the font's own bold and italic faces. Inline code keeps its monospace, and menus, settings and the chat keep the app's own font.
It follows you
The note font syncs with the rest of your settings, so a note you write in Courier Prime on your laptop opens in Courier Prime on your phone. Text size is the one that stays on each device, see Change the appearance and accent color. The chat can switch the font for you too, like write my notes in Inter, see Change settings from the chat.
Set in iA Writer Duo on A4 pages, a note reads like a page off a typewriter. To give its lines more room, or less, see Change the line height.
