Highlights mark the line you will want again: the decision in a page of discussion, the definition in a page of lecture.
On desktop
Select text and use the highlight button in the editor toolbar, then pick one of eight colors: yellow, green, blue, pink, orange, purple, red or cyan.
On mobile
Select text, then tap the highlighter button on the toolbar above the keyboard. The same eight colors appear as swatches, along with a clear option.
Removing a highlight
Select the highlighted text and choose Clear highlight from the same menu.
Using color sparingly
Highlights work because they are rare. One color for decisions and one for open questions gets you most of the value, and a page that is half yellow tells you nothing.
